There are lenses that you need some of the time and there are those you need almost all of the time. A fast, moderate telephoto is one such lens of the latter kind. An ideal focal length for portraits and weddings is around 70 - 90 mm. It allows the photographer to fill the scene with head and shoulders without being too close or far away from the subject. Add a fast minimum aperture and it will produce the wonderfully shallow depth of field that everyone loves that makes the person(s) in the frame stand out against a smooth blurry background. It's a "must have" for any professional photographer and today I received the daddy of them all - a Nikon 85mm f1.4G Lens. This is a professional quality lens at a price to match but what a beauty! Coupled with my Nikon D800, this baby should really deliver. It's quite a large lens with a lot of glass but the image quality and performance is second to none but don't take my word for it. The link below is a review of the lens by Ryan Brenizer, one of the best wedding photographers in the world.
